embarking on a new journey

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Lao-tzu, Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)

i've been a fan of the innovative japanese designers for years, especially yohji yamamoto and junya watanabe, who started their fashion life at the bunka fashion college in tokyo. so i was really excited to learn that SML fashion academy teaches the japanese method of pattern making.

the school is on the 1st floor of a rather bland shop lot in jalan bukit bintang. one could easily miss the entrance tucked among the mamak restaurants and busy bukit bintang shoplets. it took me a few tries but i finally found them.

because the school was in a shoplot, i did feel a tinge of doubt as i was walking up the stairs to the first floor. after all KL & PJ are full of "fashion schools" teaching basic dress making, which is great if that's what you want to do. in fact, my first course, many many moons ago, was with a lady called mary in a shoplot in ipoh who introduced me to the joys of dressmaking. this time though, i wanted to do something more creative.

once into the reception!

the students' work on display looked like they had come off the paris runway. looking closely at one of the designs, i realised the creator had woven strips of shaded soft netting into fabric and made up a gown which could be converted into a short dress.

this was exactly the sort of thing that i wanted to do.
not just make clothes (though i enjoy doing that a lot), but create fashion. i want to make art from fabric and take my skills to the next level.
